Forever Ever?

Ruben Studdard Files for Divorce
Another celebrity marriage takes a hit.  In addition to Kim Kardashian, Ruben Studdard has just filed for divorce from his wife of 4 years.  While many would say “Wow they made it 4 years!  Hey its better than 72 days!”   We somehow miss the mark that marriage is for better, for worse AND FOR KEEPS!!!

Celebrity marriages seem to water down the institution of marriage, changing the nature and definition of the vows from “till death do us part” to “till you get on my nerves OR the publicity dies down from our wedding”.

As wedding planners, even though we care about the aesthetics of the wedding day, a marriage is more than the flowers and white dress, we plan your special day because you have found the one person that you have committed to spend the rest of your life with…..forever…. THIS IS WHY WE CELEBRATE!!

The celebrity lifestyle is idolized by many, the glitz, the glam….the fairytale wedding! So many are misled in thinking, if the fairy tale wedding doesn’t have a happy ending, how can any ordinary marriage have a chance of success?
Too many celebrities deceive onlookers to believe in the world wind romance….love at first sight, marriage in 3 months or 3 days.  There is more time spent planning the wedding than working on the relationship.

I have witnessed my own parents’ marriage of 36 years, and trust me, it’s more than overcoming being bashful about using the bathroom in front of each other!!! It takes WORK, SWEAT, TEARS, STICKING IT OUT IN SICKNESS & HEALTH, FORGIVENESS and LOTS MORE.
At Events by MOJA we encourage our clients and say BEFORE YOU PLAN YOUR WEDDINGPLAN YOUR MARRIAGE.  We also have suggestions of counselors and books available.

I came across a book I would recommend to those in marriages and those contemplating marriage called Things I Wish I'd Known Before We Got Married  By: Dr. Gary Chapman (Author of the 5 Love Languages) Purchase Here

The book centers around love, romance, conflict resolution, forgiveness, and sexual fulfillment within marriage. Included are insightful questions, suggestions, and exercises.  Here are some of the chapters:

I wish I had known:
Chapter 1. That being in love is not an adequate foundation for building a successful marriage
Chapter 2. That romantic love has two stages
Chapter 5.That apologizing is a sign of strength
Chapter 6. That Toilets are not self cleaning
Chapter 9. That mutual sexual fulfillment is not automatic

Something needs to be done to uphold the institution of marriage.

What pre-marriage counseling or books did you read / are you reading??
